Ernest Freeberg, associate professor in the history department, has received the Langum Charitable Trust’s David J. Langum Sr. Prize in American Legal History for his book, Democracy’s Prisoner: Eugene V. Debs, The Great War, and the Right to Dissent. The annual award goes to a book that is ‘rooted in sound scholarship, accessible to the educated general reader, and touches upon topics of general interest to the American public.’

A book review by Michael Kulikowski, the Riggsby Director of UT Knoxville’s Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, was published in the Feb. 12, 2009, issue of the London Review of Books. Kulikowski’s review, “Bed-Hopping and Coup-Plotting,” examines the book Attila the Hun: Barbarian Terror and the Fall of the Roman Empire by Christopher Kelly.

Mary McAlpin, associate professor of French, has been elected to a five-year term as a member of the Modern Languages Association Divisional Committee on Eighteenth-Century French Studies, for the years 2009-2013.

Lydia Pulsipher, emeritus professor in the geography department, recently received the highest honor of the Conference of Latin Americanist Geographers, the Preston E. James Eminent Latin Americanist Career Award, in recognition of her outstanding research contributions on the geography of Latin America and the Caribbean and the significant impact of her research within and beyond academia. The award cites Pulsipher’s work on the cultural and environmental geography of the Eastern Caribbean and her collaborative outreach with the Smithsonian Institution to produce “Seeds of Change,” a major Smithsonian exhibit for the 1992 quincentennial celebration of the arrival of Columbus in the New World.

Josh Robbins, a graduate student in the English department, has won the James Wright Poetry Prize for his poem, “Against Forgiveness.” The prize includes a $1,000 award and publication of the poem in the journal Mid-American Review. Robbins’ recent work has appeared or is forthcoming in Mid-American Review, Borderlands: Texas Poetry Review, Dash Literary Journal, Center, and the anthology Writing By Ear.
