KNOXVILLE — The College of Architecture and Design has invited several nationally and internationally prominent architects, designers, historians and theorists to present their work as part of the Robert B. Church III Memorial Lecture Series this semester.
Free and open to the public, all presentations and lectures are held at 5:30 p.m. in the McCarty Auditorium of the Art + Architecture Building.
The lecture series kicks off Monday, Feb. 9, with Julia Smyth-Pinney, an associate professor in the School of Architecture at University of Kentucky College of Design.
Pinney’s lecture, “Michelangelo and Borromini: Designing Rome’s University,” will examine the history and development of Rome’s original university building, Palazzo Sapienza. She currently is working on a book on the subject.
The rest of the lecture series lineup this semester includes:
Feb. 16 — “Chattanooga’s Southside: Urban Design, Architecture and Development” by Heidi Hefferlin and Craig Kronenberg. Hefferlin and Kronenberg founded Hefferlin + Kronenber Architects in Chattanooga. Their presentation will examine residential and commercial developments in the Southside district of Chattanooga.
Feb. 23 — “La Dallman: Post-industrial Fabrications” by Grace La and James Dallman. Founders of La Dallman Architects in Milwaukee, La and Dallman’s presentation will focus on their own work. Projects range from attempts to engage the public realm through infrastructural interventions and redefinition of public space as well as to propose strategic insertions within emergent landscapes.
March 5 — “Thought and Form” by Juhani Pallasmaa. The General Shale Lecturer, Pallasmaa is a Finnish architect and former professor of architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology. One of Pallasmaa’s many books on architectural theory — “The Eyes of the Skin – Architecture and the Senses” — has become a classic of architectural theory and is required reading in many schools of architecture around the world.
March 30 — “Making Territory” by Fritz Steiner. Steiner is dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin. Specializing in landscape architecture and planning, Steiner will lecture about a wide range of creative work that draws upon his own personal and collaborative research projects.
April 6 — “Public Works: Bringing Life, Personality and Warmth to Public Architecture” by Craig Curtis. Curtis, a partner with The Miller/Hull Partnership, will lecture about the firm’s work and design philosophies. The firm’s design philosophy centers around two architectural ideas: using a building’s structure to create a significant place within a site, and being sensitive to climate and to respond to environmental demands with the form of the building.

Continuing architectural education credit can be earned at each of these lectures.
