Margaret Lazarus Dean of the English department has received a $25,000 National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship in Creative Writing.
The NEA is the sister organization to the National Endowment for the Humanities, and funds creative artists, principally writers and studio artists.

French professor Chris Holmlund’s third anthology, "American Cinema of the 1990s," was published by Rutgers University Press last fall. Holmlund also has accepted the nomination to run for president of the Society for Film and Media Studies, the world’s largest academic film/media organization, this spring.

This week’s issue of Nature magazine has a report about the research of UT Knoxville graduate student Rachael Neilan concerning her work on mathematical modeling of cholera. Neilan’s research, part of her UT Knoxville dissertation work supported by the National Science Foundation, develops the first-ever methods for the best intervention strategies for treatment for this serious bacterial disease.
Neilan’s presentation was based on work with her adviser, Suzanne Lenhart, professor of mathematics at UT Knoxville and an associate director of the campus’ new National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis. Other collaborators include Holly Gaff of Old Dominion University and Renee Fister of Murray State University, both of whom obtained their doctoral degrees in mathematics at UT Knoxville.

Third-year College of Law student Daniel L. Ellis has won the Tennessee Bar Association’s Law Student Volunteer Award. Ellis was recognized for his work on behalf of advocacy issues with organizations including the Children’s Advocacy Network, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, the Disability Resource Center and UT’s Pro Bono Program.
