KNOXVILLE — Ten high school students from across Tennessee are sharing in $40,000 in scholarships thanks to their victories in the annual University of Tennessee-Pro2Serve Math Contest.

Featuring individual and team competitions, the contest is designed to test students’ knowledge of mathematics. The top 10 individual contest winners received four-year, $4,000 scholarships to UT Knoxville, which can be used for any major at the university’s flagship campus.

Winners were Alborz Bejnood, Oak Ridge High School; Demetros Bovopoulos, Knoxville West High School; David Couch, Brentwood High School; Andrew Hanson, Farragut High School; Feiran Hao, Martin Luther King Magnet School; Seungmoon Lee, McCallie School; Clint McKelvey, Maryville High School; Amy Oreskovic, Dobyns-Bennett High School; Devansh Patel, Greenville High School; and Minseok Song, McCallie School.

The scholarships are funded by the office of the UT Knoxville Chancellor. Winners were chosen based on their scores on an essay-type exam that tested their knowledge on algebra I and II and geometry.

In addition to the individual competition, the contest also featured the Math Bowl, a double-elimination team competition. Farragut High School was the overall winner of the Math Bowl followed by Maryville High School. First place in the small school category went to Memphis University School followed by David Brainerd Christian School of Chattanooga.

All winners received trophies, plaques and certificates in recognition of excellence at different stages of the competition.

The purpose of the contest is to promote interest in mathematics among Tennessee high school students, to encourage them toward careers in mathematics, science and engineering, and to recognize their mathematical prowess.

The UT Knoxville Mathematics Department and Oak Ridge-based Pro2Serve Professional Project Services Inc. sponsored the contest, now in its 10th year. More information on Pro2Serve can be found online at http://www.p2s.com.
