Palmira BrummettThis week’s Pre-Game Faculty Showcase is "Iran and Iraq in Historical Perspective: Shaping National Identities," featuring Palmira Brummett, professor of history. Brummett will discuss the emergence of Iraq and Iran as nation states and the roles of Islam, imperialism and foreign relations in shaping national identity.

The showcase starts at 5:45 p.m. in the University Center ballroom, two hours before the Vols kickoff against the Alabama Crimson Tide. The event is free and open to the public.

The UT Pre-Game Faculty Showcase is now in its 19th year. The College of Arts and Sciences selects a top faculty member for each presentation.

Brummett, a Distinguished Professor in the Humanities, specializes in Middle Eastern, world, Ottoman and Islamic history. She received a National Endowment for the Humanities Grant for 2003-2004 and she was awarded Lindsey Young Professorships in 1998 and 1999. Brummett also won the Phi Beta Kappa Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and Research.

Brummett has published several books and more than 30 articles. She serves on the editorial boards for Eurasian Studies and Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East and reviews manuscripts for many publishers, including Oxford University Press and Harvard Middle Eastern and Islamic Review.

Each showcase program lasts 45 minutes, including 30 minutes for the presentation and 15 minutes for a discussion period. Light refreshments will be served.
