Jim McCarter Send Roses ceremony group shot

Each month UT’s Positive Recognition Committee selects one employee to receive the Send Roses Award for outstanding courtesy and customer service. This month’s recipient was Facilities Services’ Jim McCarter.

Jim, a senior computer support specialist, began working at UT Knoxville for Technical Services nearly 14 years ago. In 1997, he transferred to the Facilities Services Department but it’s others around campus that benefit from Jim’s knowledge and expertise. He is a familiar face around campus, and on a typical day can be found hooking up equipment everywhere from classrooms and offices to skyboxes at Neyland Stadium.

Jim truly embodies the Volunteer Spirit. He donates his time to campus radio station WUTK during the summer months when it tends to run low on DJs. His Send Roses nomination letter cited one occasion where he spent the morning chipping ice from sidewalks, simply because it needed to be done.

According to colleagues, Jim McCarter senior computer support specialist in Facilities Services, is one of those rare people who are willing to help anyone at anytime. Always willing to go the extra mile, he’s described as naturally kind and very helpful.

At the Send Roses award ceremony earlier this month, Jim was presented with a framed certificate of recognition, a gift certificate to the UT Book and Supply Store, a reserved parking spot of his choice on campus for one month and a dozen roses.

"And they only lasted a day!" quipped Jim, in reference to the roses. Ever the gentleman, he immediately gave them all away.
