For National Campus Safety Awareness Month, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, hosted two events on campus to help promote safety among students, faculty and staff this week.
Security On Campus Inc., a national non-profit organization, chose UT as one of several sites around the country to kick off the month.
During a ceremony on Tuesday, U.S. Rep. John J. Duncan Jr. presented a copy of a congressional resolution recognizing the month to the university and Security On Campus Inc. Knoxville Police Chief Sterling Owen then presented a proclamation from the city recognizing UT Campus Safety Awareness Week on behalf of the city of Knoxville and Mayor Bill Haslam.
UT Safety Day was held throughout the day Wednesday, with various tents located around campus, in the Fort Sanders neighborhood and at Sutherland Village. Representatives from the UT and Knoxville police departments, Knoxville Fire Department, the division of Student Affairs, the Student Government Association and the Historic Fort Sanders Neighborhood Association staffed the events.
At the tents, students, faculty and staff learned about using the T:Link and T:Late Nite. The campus community also received other safety tips and another chance to sign up for UT ALERT, the campus’ free emergency notification text messaging system. So far, more than 19,600 students, faculty and staff have signed up for UT ALERT.
The T:Link is a free on-demand shuttle service for individuals. Students, faculty and staff can call 974-4080 between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. to get a ride.
The T:Late Nite is a bus route that runs on campus and in Fort Sanders from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
