David Schumann in the classroomDavid Schumann, professor of business, has been selected to be the inaugural director of UT Knoxville’s Tennessee Teaching and Learning Center.

Created as part of the university’s retention efforts, the Tennessee Teaching and Learning Center (TN TLC) provides assistance to UT faculty in developing better classroom teaching skills.

"We are excited about the benefits the TN TLC will bring to classroom teaching at Tennessee and are convinced that Dr. Schumann will create quickly a functional center to aid both newly hired and veteran professors in their quest to become the best classroom teachers possible," said Provost Robert Holub.

The center, to be housed in Aconda Court, will focus on improving teaching skills and the understanding of how learning occurs. The center will offer short courses, seminars, workshops, consulting and mentoring.

Schumann is William J. Taylor Professor of Business in the Department of Marketing and Logistics and co-director of the College of Business Administration’s undergraduate Global Leadership Scholars Program.

Schumann earned his bachelor’s degree in education at the University of Arizona, a master’s in counseling education at Arizona State University, a master’s in social psychology at the University of Missouri and a doctorate in social psychology and marketing at the University of Missouri. He joined the UT faculty in 1985 and has served as department chair and associate dean of the college during his tenure.

In the College of Business Administration, Schumann created the mandatory, two-credit doctoral teaching preparation seminar and a weeklong institute for executives who wish to make the transition to academia and college teaching.
