KNOXVILLE — Events celebrating the 30th anniversary of TVA vs. Hill, the snail darter case, will be held on Friday at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and at Market Square in downtown Knoxville.
UT’s College of Law, Environmental Law Organization and the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy are presenting a symposium focusing on the case, which thrust East Tennessee into the national spotlight after the discovery of the snail darter, a small fish once thought to be endangered, caused a controversial $116 million dam project to be pre-empted.
The scientists, plaintiffs and attorneys, who were students and teachers at UT, along with the landowners whose lands were taken, are returning to talk about their experiences and how the case changed our state and our law.
The symposium will run from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday at the College of Law. The event is free and open to the public. Cost is $90 for those who want to earn continuing law education credit.
Afterward, the Environmental Law Organization will hold a benefit event in Market Square with dinner provided by Tomato Head, music by the Chillbillies, a costume contest, auction and more. All proceeds to fund efforts to list the Cerulean Warble, a Cumberland Plateau songbird, as an endangered species.
