KNOXVILLE – “Empowering Women: Ingredients for Survival in the 21st Century” is the theme of the Women of Color Summit to be held on Tuesday, March 11, at the University of Tennessee.
The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Carolyn P. Brown Memorial University Center.
The event’s keynote speaker is Joy DeGruy Leary, an author and professor at Portland State University with more than 20 years of practical experience as a social work professional.
Concurrent sessions and panel discussions on topics including leadership and mentoring, health and wellness, financial planning and professional development are designed to prepare women of color to serve their communities as professionals, students, faculty and staff.
A diverse group of UTK administrators, faculty, staff and students has been instrumental in planning this event. Christina Goode, a summit committee member, said the committee hopes to make the conference an annual event.
“There is a need for UTK as an educational institution to be more inclusive in addressing the diverse needs of the females on campus,” Goode said. “We can reach more goals and bring about more unity through increased awareness.”
The various sessions will address issues that affect women in general and particularly women of color.
