KNOXVILLE — A month of celebrating the achievements of African Americans ends on a high note at the University of Tennessee with the Black History Month Gala this Friday.
UT’s Black Cultural Programming Committee and the UT chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People organized the first-time event.
The Black History Month Gala begins at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29, in the multi-purpose room in the Panhellenic Building at 1531 Cumberland Ave. The event features various musical performances and poetry readings by UT students.
“This gala gives us an opportunity to end the month with a festive event that showcases the talents of UT students and individuals in the community,” said organizers NAACP chapter president Akina Morrow and BCPC team leader Melody Springfield. “We hope to host a similar event every year and join forces with as many student organizations as possible.”
The event is free and open to the public. Attire is semi-formal, and refreshments will be provided.
