Legislative priorities involving energy and the environment will be the subject of a Jan. 31 University of Tennessee forum featuring local, state and federal officials. The forum begins at 7 p.m. in the University Center Auditorium.

Students Promoting Environmental Action in Knoxville (SPEAK), the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy and Make Orange Green are sponsoring the forum, which will cap off a full day of Focus the Nation events at UT.

Focus the Nation is a daylong event where students and faculty will discuss global warming solutions that can then be brought to the attention of policymakers. UT is one of more than a 1,000 institutions nationwide participating in this event.

Panelists at the evening forum will be state Sen. Tim Burchett; U.S. Senate Energy Committee Staff Director Frank U. Macchiarola; Paul Gilman, director of Oak Ridge Center for Advanced Studies and former science adviser for the Environmental Protection Agency; and Madeleine Weil, Energy and Sustainability Task Force chair for the city of Knoxville. Jerry Paul, Distinguished Fellow for Energy Policy at the Baker Center, will be the moderator.

Organizers said the panel has been asked to consider pressing energy and environmental issues through the eyes of policymakers in order to give a behind-the-scenes perspective.
