KNOXVILLE — Visiting architect Patricia Patkau will lecture at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, in the McCarty Auditorium, Room 109, of the Art + Architecture Building at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Her lecture will explore different types of buildings – buildings for education, residential projects and large-scale libraries – using projects done by her office. She will discuss the reasoning behind these projects and the issues and ideas that inform her work in general.
Free and open to the public, this lecture is part of the Robert B. Church III Memorial Lecture Series organized each semester by the College of Architecture and Design.
The lecture series has brought many regionally, nationally and internationally prominent architects, designers, historians and theorists like Patkau to the college for the past 33 years.
Patkau, along with her partner John Patkau, runs Patkau Architects in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She has a Master of Architecture degree from Yale University and is currently a professor in the School of Architecture at the University of British Columbia.
Patkau considers herself a generalist in architecture rather than a specialist in a particular topic. To her, architecture is about a full and complex range of issues, not just one.
“Architecture needs to be both ‘art’ and ‘green’ and many other things as well. Buildings need to be sustainable, but they also should enrich human experience in a myriad of ways,” she said.
Continuing architectural education credit can be earned at Patkau’s lecture.
