KNOXVILLE — The first speaker in the UT Pre-Game Faculty Showcase, Robert J. Bast, discusses “Changing Perceptions of Jesus: A Historical Overview,” 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, in the University Center Ballroom.
The UT Pre-Game Faculty Showcase, now entering its 18th year, is held two hours before every home football game. The programs feature faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences talking about their area of expertise.
The programs are free and open to the public. Each program lasts 45 minutes. Light refreshments are served, and door prizes including footballs and basketballs signed by UT coaches are awarded.
Bast is an associate professor of history and Riggsby Director of the Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. He is well known for his engaging presentations on “The DaVinci Code.”
The Marco Institute is being highlighted this fall with the university-wide Medieval and Renaissance Semester.
Bast earned his doctorate in early modern Europe with an emphasis on late medieval and Reformation Germany at the University of Arizona, Tucson. He joined the UT faculty in 1994.
While maintaining an active research program, Bast serves as editor of the scholarly book series “Studies in the History of Christian Thought” and is the author of “Honor Your Fathers: Catechisms and the Emergence of Patriarchal Ideology in Germany, c. 1400-1600.” He also edited “The Reformation of Faith in the Context of Late Medieval Theology and Piety: Essays by Berndt Hamm.”
Bast received the College of Arts and Sciences’ Faculty Award for Academic Outreach in 2006. His excellence in teaching also has earned him the UT Teaching Award, the Leroy P. Graf Award for Outstanding Professor of History, the UT National Alumni Association Outstanding Teaching Award and the UT Jefferson Prize for Excellence in Research, Teaching and Service.
