KNOXVILLE — Nathan Boals, 21, of Hixson, Tenn., died Sunday while on a study abroad trip in Paris. He was a senior in communication studies.

Boals was one of eight UT students on trip led by Kenneth Levine, an assistant professor of communication studies. Eleven students from Michigan State University also are on the trip.

UT Police were notified Sunday night by Levine. Levine reported that Paris police found Boals’ body lying at the bottom of a stairwell at 5 p.m. Sunday, Paris time, and there was no preliminary evidence of foul play. An autopsy was done Monday, and the investigation is continuing.

The trip, which began last week, is intended to introduce students to the similarities and differences in international and organizational communication between the U.S. and European Union member nations. Though based in Paris, students will take excursions to Brussels, Antwerp and Brugges in Belgium and Chartres, France.
