KNOXVILLE — Centaur Records has released a compact disc entitled Chopin Waltzes by David Northington, professor of piano in the University of Tennessee School of Music.
He will perform selections from the CD in a solo recital entitled “A Waltz Through the Life of Fredric Chopin” at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, in the UT Music Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.
The internationally released recording is available locally and online. Northington said he looks forward to reading reviews of his CD on vendors’ Web sites.
The New York Times praised Northington as “an immensely gifted musician” after his debut recital at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York in 1975.
Since then he has toured in the U.S., Canada, China, Russia and in eastern and western Europe. Through the United States Information Agency, Northington was selected as an Artistic Ambassador and toured extensively in France, Spain and Portugal.
Northington won the Judges Prize at the fourth Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and other awards at the Concert Artists Guild Competition, the East/West Artists Competition and the American Music Scholarship Association’s International Competition.
He also received the Tennessee Arts Commission’s Artist of the Year Award.
Northington received degrees from the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music and the Yale University School of Music. He joined the UT School of Music faculty in 1977 and has taught master classes at leading conservatories.
His teaching awards include the Tennessee Music Teachers Association Teacher of the Year Award and the Tennessee Governor’s School of the Arts Outstanding Teacher Award.
