ORNL Scientist to Discuss Nuclear Nonproliferation

KNOXVILLE — The city of Oak Ridge and Oak Ridge National Laboratory have been associated with America’s nuclear program since its lead role in World War II’s Manhattan Project. Today, ORNL is a global leader in nuclear nonproliferation to halt the spread of nuclear weapons through diplomacy and technology.

Lawrence J. Satkowiak, director of nuclear nonproliferation programs at ORNL, will lead a discussion on the topic entitled “Aspects of Nuclear Terrorism,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, as part of the Conversations about World Affairs lecture series. Satkowiak’s talk will focus on the Former Soviet Union/Newly Independent States region of the world. The lecture will take place at the International House and is open to the university community.

The ORNL Nuclear Nonproliferation Programs Office utilizes the laboratory’s science and technology base to support the nuclear nonproliferation mission of the U.S. government. One element of that effort is addressing the safeguards and security issues associated with the nuclear and radioactive legacy of the cold war.

Satkowiak is the senior program contact for ORNL’s nuclear nonproliferation programs. He is responsible for the development and implementation of domestic and international policy aimed at reducing threats to the United States from nuclear weapons. Satkowiak also serves on national and international committees that focus on safeguarding nuclear materials and the nonproliferation of weapons and weapon technology.

Conversation series topics coincide with regions covered in the Geography Department’s popular World Regional Geography course. The programs are a component of the international and intercultural awareness initiative to broaden students’ knowledge and experience with places and people other than their own.

The last Conversations topic of the spring semester will take place at 7 p.m. April 18, at the International House. Josh Rushing, a current affairs correspondent and veteran Marine will be the featured speaker. Rushing is set to host a political and current affairs program for Al-Jazeera International — a 24-hour, English-speaking news network set to launch this spring. His topic will be “Al-Jazeera: A New Force in International Media.”
