KNOXVILLE — A University of Tennessee professor joined in ringing The Opening BellSM at the New York Stock Exchange on March 16.

John “Tom” Mentzer

John “Tom” Mentzer, Bruce Excellence Chair of Business in UT’s College of Business Administration and a professor in the Department of Marketing and Logistics, accompanied executives from Stage Stores Inc. when the company’s Chairman and CEO James Scarborough rang the bell. Mentzer is on the board of directors of Stage Stores, whose stock will begin trading on the NYSE that day.

Mentzer joined the Stage Store Inc.’s board in 2001 as supply chain expert. He advises the company on global and domestic sourcing issues and distribution center operations. He also provides logistical advice about where to build new stores. He serves as the supply chain expert on the due diligence when Stage Stores purchases other companies.

Stage Stores Inc. is a specialty department store company that sells moderately priced, brand-name and private-label apparel, accessories, cosmetics and footwear. As of Jan. 29, the company had 529 stores in 29 states. Stage Stores operate under the Stage, Bealls and Palais Royal names in the south central U.S. and under the Peebles name throughout the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast and Midwest.
