KNOXVILLE – From Europe to Russia and back again to South Asia, North Africa and on to the Middle East, the University of Tennessee-s Conversations on World Affairs series allows students to globetrot with the foremost experts of these lands.

Todd Diacon, professor and head of UT’s history department will lead a discussion on Cuban American issues at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20 at the International House on campus. All sessions are free and open to the university community.
Diacon will focus on the prominent role Cuba plays in the American psyche, which is far out of proportion to its size and population, according to Diacon. He also will explore domestic spying and national security issues in Cuba as they relate to recent events in America.
Diacon recently was honored for writing the -best book on Brazilian history published in 2003-04.- His book, “Stringing Together a Nation: Candido Mariano da Silva Rondon and the Construction of a Modern Brazil, 1906-1939,” received the Warren Dean Prize, awarded every other year by the Conference on Latin American History, an affiliate of the American Historical Association. He also teaches a course on the history of the Cuban Revolution.
The Conversation topics coincide with regions covered in the Geography Department-s popular World Regional Geography course. The programs are a component of the international and intercultural awareness initiative to broaden students’ knowledge and experience with places and people other than their own.
