KNOXVILLE — Phi Beta Sigma fraternity will host its second annual Bigger and Better Business Expo at the University of Tennessee Feb. 9. This career fair and networking mixer will take place from noon to 3 p.m. in the Carolyn P. Brown Memorial University Center Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.
The expo fosters networking opportunities for minority business owners, entrepreneurs and commercial and government entities committed to diversity. The event also allows them to identify potential job applicants. UT students will be able to network with employers, learn about job and volunteer opportunities and have their resumes viewed by business professionals. They also can learn more about minority-owned and -operated businesses specializing in a variety of fields.
The idea was first tested in 1924 with an exhibition in Philadelphia that included 25 statements and more than fifty exhibits. The response was so great that in 1925, Phi Beta Sigma officers voted unanimously to make the business fair the public program of the fraternity, said I.L. Scruggs, a founder of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.
Phi Beta Sigma believes that the improvement of minority economic conditions is a major facet in the improvement of the society-s general welfare, according to event coordinator Christopher Jones.
