KNOXVILLE — Dr. Evgeny Velikhov, president of Russia’s Kurchatov Institute and academician-secretary (vice president) of the Russian Academy of Science, will give an address entitled “The State of U.S.-Russia Scientific Relations: An outline of progress, 1960-2005”; 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Friday December 9, McClung Museum Auditorium, Circle Park.

Dr. Evgeny Velikhov

Velikhov leads Russia-s involvement in GLORIAD, the global ring network for advanced applications development. A renowned scientist in the field of plasma physics and controlled nuclear fusion, Velikhov is well-known for his role in the cleanup of Chernobyl. For more than 40 years he has influenced cyber infrastructure, fusion and nuclear energy. His work as a primary science and policy advisor to the Soviet and Russian governments since the 1960s has made him one of Russia-s most prominent scientists.

GLORIAD, a key project of the University of Tennessee-s partnership with ORNL through the Joint Institute for Computational Sciences, provides scientists around the globe with advanced computer networking tools that improve communications and data exchange. This enables daily collaboration on common problems and research, promoting increased engagement and cooperation between their countries, beginning with scientists, educators and young people. Additional information on GLORIAD is available at http://www.gloriad.org.

In addition to his scientific and political roles, Velikhov has been active for many years on numerous children’s initiatives. He established the first US-Soviet children’s email network in 1988 (which later became I*EARN). He also took Junior Achievement into Russia in 1991, leading to the education of more than five million Russian children in the principles and practices of business management and the free market economy.
