KNOXVILLE — The UT College of Engineering will host Engineers Day on Thursday, Oct. 20, on the Knoxville campus. More than 700 potential engineering students from high schools across Tennessee will be on campus to enjoy discussions, project demonstrations, exhibits, food and fun.
Opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. in the University Center Ballroom (223 and 225). Dr. Way Kuo, dean of engineering, will welcome the students and introduce guest speaker and UT alumnus Mark Medley, president and CEO of Control Technology Inc.
Medley earned the bachelor of science in mechanical engineering in 1969. He is past chairman of the COE Board of Advisors and is active in numerous civic and professional organizations.
Visiting students will participate in the Engineers Day Quiz Bowl, sponsored by Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society 1-3:15 p.m. in 307 Science & Engineering Research Facility Teams of four students compete in a written examination. Top teams advance to the Quiz Bowl semifinals and the two top teams after the semifinal round advance to the Quiz Bowl Championship.
The student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers will sponsor the Fourth Annual Balsa Wood Bridge Competition. Students from participating schools design and build bridges and bring them to Engineers Day where they are tested for structural efficiency.
A panel of engineering experts will judge exhibits constructed by various campus engineering organizations for presentation to the high school students. Exhibits will be open 10:30 am-12:00 p.m. and 1-3:30 p.m. in various engineering buildings on the Hill.
Engineers Day has been a UT tradition since 1912. Engineering classes are dismissed during the event in order to provide an opportunity for UT engineering students to interact with the high schoolers.
