KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee Department of History and the Center for the Study of War and Society will present the annual Colonel John B. McKinney Lecture on War and Society Sept. 22.
The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. in 226-27 University Center. Refreshments will be served. The public is welcome.
McKinney, a UT alumnus and U.S. Army retiree, provided financial support for the annual series of lectures.
This year’s topic is “Oral History, POWs, and Popular Myths: A Case Study of a Tuskegee Airman and Other Prisoners of War.”
Dr. Lewis H. Carlson, professor emeritus of history at Western Michigan University, and U.S. Air Force Lt. Colonel Alexander Jefferson will deliver the lecture.
For more than 30 years, Carlson taught courses on twentieth-century American history with a special emphasis on oral and social history. He has lectured all over the world and written scripts for and co-produced more than 100 educational tapes.
Jefferson has degrees from Clark College and Wayne State University. He served in Michigan public schools for 30 years as a teacher and administrator, and lives in Detroit. He has won numerous citations and remains active in Veterans- and Tuskegee Airmen organizations.
