KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee Center for International Education has named Dr. A. Gail Bier associate director of programs abroad.

Dr. A. Gail Bier

Bier has more than 20 years administrative experience in the U.S. and other countries. She has visited 30 countries and speaks Spanish and French.

“Dr. Bier brings a wealth of experience working with study abroad programs across this country,” said Dr. Jim Gehlhar, CIE director.

Bier’s most recent position was executive director of the Center for International Studies at Tulane University in New Orleans.

She worked in Spain as a delegate for the Fulbright Commission and as director of academic advising for the Institute of North American Studies.

She also was a full-time professor of sociology for 10 years at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona.

Bier received a master of education degree from Harvard University in 1994 and a doctorate in sociology from Cornell University in 1979.

CIE is a department within the Division of Academic Affairs. It has four units: the International House, the Programs Abroad Office, the Office of International Student Services and the Office of International Scholar Services.

Bier’s primary responsibility as associate director of the center’s programs abroad will be to work with faculty and administration to promote and facilitate student opportunities to study, work, intern, volunteer and travel abroad.

“Dr. Bier will help us help UT meet its goals for engaging students in experiences abroad,” said Gehlhar.
