KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee has awarded scholarships for the upcoming academic year to two Claiborne High School graduates.

Ashley E. Short of Tazewell received the Shade and Dollie Pressnell Scholarship. Ashley N. Hurst of New Tazewell received the Faye Pressnell Layne Memorial Scholarship.

Both Short and Hurst will enter UT’s College of Arts and Sciences in the fall of 2005. Short will focus on a pre-professional major while Hurst plans to study medical technology.

The two scholarships honor former Claiborne County residents from the same family.

Shade and Dollie Pressnell were born in Claiborne County and were active members of the Methodist Church and Farm Bureau. Their children established the scholarship.

Layne, a graduate of Claiborne County High School, was the daughter of Shade and Dollie Pressnell. Her siblings created the scholarship in her honor.

Both scholarships are given annually to incoming freshmen from Claiborne High School and are renewable for three additional years.
