KNOXVILLE — Dr. Leonard Reid has been named dean of the University of Tennessee College of Communication and Information.

Dr. Leonard Reid

Reid was associate dean of graduate studies and research and professor of advertising at the University of Georgia Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Reid will start July 1. He replaces Dr. Faye Julian, who is retiring after serving as dean of the college for the last three years.

“We are all delighted that Leonard Reid will be joining us,” UT Knoxville Chancellor Loren Crabtree said. “He is a talented, experienced administrator and an excellent scholar.

“Under his leadership, we expect the College of Communication and Information to move quickly into the top ranks of its peer institutions.”

Crabtree said Julian’s tenure as dean was outstanding.

“Faye’s leadership of the college on an interim, then full-time, basis was a tremendous help to the university during a time of change,” he said, “and she leaves the college in great shape to move forward.”

Julian oversaw a restructuring of the college and addition of the School of Information Sciences in 2002.

Reid said the college’s future looks bright.

“I believe that we are positioned to move among the nation’s elite communication programs in the not-too-distant future,” Reid said, “and will move to the forefront of communication inquiry and professional education and training.”

Reid received the bachelor’s degree in business from Virginia Commonwealth University, and the master’s degree in advertising and the Ph.D. in communication from Illinois.

The College of Communication and Information includes the schools of advertising and public relations, communication studies, information sciences, and journalism and electronic media. It also includes a research center in information studies.

The college is home to about 50 tenured or tenure-track faculty members and more than 1800 undergraduate and graduate students.
