Buddy Mitchell, University of Tennessee associate vice president for agricultural development and government relations, has been named interim vice president for agriculture.
University of Tennessee President John Petersen made the announcement Monday.

Mitchell assumes the job Oct. 1, filling the vacancy made when current agriculture VP Jack Britt takes his new position as UT executive vice president.
“Buddy Mitchell has served this university well for many years,” Petersen said, “and I am very pleased that he will guide the Institute of Agriculture as we begin our search for a permanent vice president.”
In previous years, Mitchell served as interim UT agriculture VP and as UT’s associate vice president for federal relations.
A native of McLemoresville, Tenn., Mitchell earned the bachelor’s degree in general agriculture from UT-Martin and the master’s degree in agricultural economics from UT-Knoxville.
He served in the United States Army, including a tour of duty in Vietnam as a civil affairs specialist in agriculture.
The Alpha Gamma Rho national agricultural fraternity recently named Mitchell one of its “Brothers of the Century.”
Mitchell is married to Penny Lancaster Mitchell. They have three children.
