The University of Tennessee will host Public Relations Day 2004 on Friday, Oct. 1.

PR Day registration will begin at 8:15 a.m. in the University Center.

The overall theme will be “Marketing Public Relations.”

Nationally renowned speakers will talk about issues facing the public relations industry. Author and PR professional J. Walker Smith will deliver the keynote address, “Marketing Concurrence: Re-engaging Resistant Consumers.”

After registering, participants will attend their choice of seven “breakout sessions” in which the speakers will discuss relevant public relations subjects like setting measurable PR objectives, marketing to seniors, and branding.

Two of the breakout sessions are planned especially for students.

The event planning session will cover product launches, targeting an audience and communications tactics. “Navigating the Interview Process” will touch on all aspects of a job interview.

The sponsors of PR Day 2004 are Ackermann Public Relations & Marketing, Eastman Chemical Company, Mary Beth West Consulting, Akins Public Strategies, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee, and Parkwest Medical Center.

The hosts are the University of Tennessee School of Advertising and Public Relations, the University of Tennessee College of Communication and Information, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA Volunteer Chapter) and the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA Sammie Lynn Puett Chapter).

“This is an exceptional opportunity for students, and thanks to PRSA we are able to keep the registration cost down for students,” said Candace White, UT faculty senate president and associate professor of the School of Advertising and Public Relations.

“We are very excited to have student groups from a number of surrounding states coming to attend this event. The students are the main reason we have Public Relations Day,” White said.
