UT President John Petersen announced the appointment Tuesday. Britt assumes the job Oct. 1.
Former UT President Eli Fly has served as interim executive vice president and chief financial officer for the past year. He will continue as chief financial officer on an interim basis.
“I am extremely pleased Jack Britt has agreed to serve in this very important role for the university,” Petersen said. “His broad experience in the areas of research and academic administration will be beneficial to the university and our partnerships with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the many agricultural and business enterprises throughout the state.”
Petersen said Britt will serve in an interim role until the UT Board of Trustees can consider his appointment at its fall meeting in November. He said Britt can assume the executive vice president’s responsibilities without a formal search since he currently is a vice president and elected officer of the university.
A native of Glasgow, Ky., Britt came to UT in July 1998 as vice president for agriculture. He came to Tennessee from North Carolina State University, where he was associate dean for research and graduate programs in the College of Veterinary Medicine and assistant director of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service.
Britt’s academic background is in reproductive physiology. Before he joined N.C. State, he was on the faculty and head of the dairy science department at Michigan State University.
He earned the bachelor’s degree in agriculture and biology at Western Kentucky University and master’s and doctoral degrees at N.C. State.
