“Morning Sun,” a documentary on China’s Cultural Revolution, will be screened Sept. 22 at the University of Tennessee.
The film features interviews with those who were participants, victims and witnesses to the Cultural Revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s, a chaotic time of power struggles, imprisonment and death as Chinese leader Mao Zedong worked to eliminate his Communist party rivals.
The film will be shown at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, in the Hodges Library auditorium.
Chinese-born filmmaker and scholar Carma Hinton, who directed “Morning Sun,” will lead a discussion with the audience after showing the film.
Hinton said the project was influenced by her personal understanding of the politics and history of the time, and her witnessing many Cultural Revolution events, which began when she was a teenager.
Co-sponsors of the screening include the UT Asian studies and cinema studies programs, the departments of art, English, history, modern foreign languages and literatures, political science, religious studies and sociology.
The event is free and open to the public.
