University of Tennessee faculty, staff and upperclassmen will help freshmen move into on-campus housing Friday and Saturday, Aug. 13 and 14.

“During Freshman Move-In we want to help make the experience a little more positive by volunteering to carry some of those boxes,” said Chaz Molder, Student Government Association president.

“In the process, we’ll have the chance to meet many new students and tell them how many great things await them at UT.”

From 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, volunteers will personally assist the approximately 4,000 freshmen who are moving into the residence halls. They also will work at information tables in Presidential Courtyard and Hess and Clement halls to answer any questions freshmen or their parents may have.

This will be the fourth year that upperclassmen have helped freshmen move in and the first time that faculty and staff will help.

Last year more than 75 students volunteered for the event that is sponsored by SGA and the Division of Student Affairs.

“Freshman Move-In is a great event because you have the chance to meet new students and get them excited about being at UT,” said Camellia Meehan, a UT student who volunteered for the Move-In last year.

“You have the opportunity to help out the freshmen and their families during this exciting, stressful and busy time. It is a great way to start out the year,” Meehan said.

“This is a way to exemplify the volunteer spirit–by helping others that you likely don’t even know move into their dorm rooms on an 80-degree day,” Molder said.
