UT Board Committee Recommends Tuition Hikes

A committee of the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees Wednesday recommended a 7.9 percent tuition hike for most UT students across the state.

The proposed increase from the Finance and Administration Committee will be considered by the full board Thursday.

Since no increases are recommended for other fees, such as programs and services, technology and transportation, the actual percentage increase for in-state undergraduates at UT-Knoxville would be 6.7 percent, Sylvia Davis, vice president for administration and finance, said.

If adopted by the full board, Tennessee undergraduate students at UT-Knoxville would pay $299 more next year. Current tuition and fees at Knoxville are $4,450. Out-of state undergraduates would pay $14,529, up $997.

At UT-Chattanooga, the annual increase would be up $241, to $4,093. Comparable numbers for UT-Martin are up $250, to $4,151.

Students in professional programs will see increases ranging from 3 to 15 percent.

The Finance and Administration Committee also passed and sent to the full board a $1.16 billion budget for the 2005 fiscal year. The proposed budget is $5.6 million higher than the current year.

UT Interim President Joe Johnson called next year’s budget a good one but said the university will have to have sound management to carry it out.

“In the future, we need the legislature to fund a robust 10 percent increase in state funding of higher education, plus perhaps a good 5 percent in funding for research,” Johnson said.

“We are poised to do great things with John Petersen (incoming UT president), and adequate funding is part of that.”
