KNOXVILLE — Dr. Faye Julian will be dean of the University of Tennessee College of Communication and Information for the next year, Chancellor Loren Crabtree has announced.

Julian has served as interim dean for the past two years following the merger of the College of Communications and the School of Information Sciences.
“Dr. Julian has done a great job of managing the College of Communication and Information during a period of reorganization and transition,” said Dr. Anne Mayhew, UT vice chancellor for academic affairs.
“We are thankful to her and look forward to another year of great service and leadership.”
The search for a new dean to succeed Julian will resume this year, Mayhew said.
A committee will be formed to begin another search soon, Mayhew said.
Julian, a professor of speech communication, has been at UT since 1962. She earned the first doctorate awarded by the College of Communications in 1977.
She was the dean of undergraduate academic affairs from 1996-2002 and chaired the undergraduate academic council and coordinated advising, first-year studies and the national student exchange program.
She also was the head of the speech communications department for five years.
In 1980 Julian was selected as a Woman of Achievement by the UT Commission for Women and she received the Communication Educator of the Year award in 1996 from the Tennessee Speech Communication Association.
“I consider it a privilege to lead this college,” Julian said. “I am very proud of what we have accomplished and I think this year will be equally exciting.
“It gives me time to complete some of the projects that I envisioned when I was appointed interim dean.”
