KNOXVILLE–The Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy at the University of Tennessee has announced the Baker Scholars program. This select group of students will be chosen from candidates with an academic and career interest in public policy and public service.
Applications are now being accepted from sophomores, juniors and seniors at the University of Tennessee for membership starting in January 2004. Five candidates will be chosen. Applications must be received by the Baker Center no later than Dec. 15, 2003.
The center-s mission is to develop programs and promote research to further public knowledge of our system of governance and to highlight the importance of public service.
Named for Tennessee-s longtime senator, former White House Chief of Staff, and current ambassador to Japan Howard Baker, the center serves as a research source for students and scholars. Public programs on issues of local, regional, national and international significance provide new insights into issues that affect our world, with a special interest in the role of the media. The Baker Center will reach out to students of all ages, promoting their understanding of our political system through innovative educational initiatives.
Students selected as Baker Scholars will assist in center programs, activities and research. They will enjoy behind-the-scenes access to speakers and other center participants and friends, attend an annual dinner and special events each semester, and interact with Baker Center researchers and local, state and national political leaders.
-We are pleased to offer this outstanding opportunity to university students,- said Baker Center Director Alan Lowe. -Tomorrow-s leaders will come from their ranks, and the chance to participate in events like the Baker Center-s recent seminar on the war in Iraq is the kind of hands-on learning experience that develops real leadership skills.-
Applicants for the Baker Scholars program must meet high academic standards, including a 3.5 grade point average. The application can be found online at www.bakercenter.utk.edu under the heading -For University Students.- Applications are also available at the Baker Center in Room 217 of Hoskins Library.
