KNOXVILLE — Dr. Jim Moran, University of Tennessee child and family studies professor and associate vice provost, has been named president-elect of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Moran, sworn in recently at the organization’s 94th Annual Convention and Exposition in Washington, D.C., assumes the presidency following a year as president-elect.

“This is certainly an honor, and I am proud to have been a part of this organization for 25 years,” Moran said. “We help individuals, families and communities to be able to make decisions that improve their relationships, health status and financial stability. Strengthening families, that-s where the real rewards lie.”

Moran, a certified family and consumer scientist and former dean of human ecology at UT, received his B.A. in psychology and history at Duke University; an M.S. in psychology at the University of Oklahoma; and a Ph.D. in family relations and child development at Oklahoma State University.

He will be the third AAFCS president from UT. The late Dr. Jessie Harris, for whom the UT human ecology building is named, was the college’s dean from 1927-57 and the organization’s president in 1942. Dr. Shirley Hastings, associate dean and professor of family and consumer sciences, UT Agricultural Extension Service, was named its president in 1997.

Moran has held several AAFCS posts, including chair, Collegiate Assembly; vice-chair, Higher Education Unit; and associate editor, Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Awards he has received include the Honor Award from the Tennessee Association of Family and Consumer Sciences; a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Oklahoma State; the American Society of Interior Designers Environmental Design Award; as well as the AAFCS Leader Award and the AAFCS New Achiever Award.

The AAFCS, founded in 1909, is a not-for-profit organization based in Alexandria, Va. Its membership of more than 10,000 includes educators, researchers, administrators, and business professionals.
