KNOXVILLE — Barbara Dewey, Dean of University of Tennessee Libraries, has been elected president-elect of the board of directors of the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL).
Dewey will become ASERL president next year. She also has served as secretary-treasurer for the group.

Founded in 1956, the organization includes 40 research and state libraries in the Southeast and is the nation’s largest regional academic library cooperative.
Dewey’s duties as president will include creation and implementation of a virtual reference service and collaborative digital libraries for library users.
Dewey, UT libraries dean since August 2000, had served at the University of Iowa campus libraries since 1987. She also has been an administrator at Northwestern University Libraries, the Minnesota Valley Regional Libraries and Indiana University-s School of Library and Information Science.
She earned the M.A. in library science in 1976 and the B.A. in anthropology/sociology in 1974 at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. She is a member of Beta Phi Mu library science academic honor society.
Dewey is the author and co-author of several books, including “Leadership, Higher Education, and the Information Age: A New Era for Information Technology and Library” published this year.
In 2000, she was named a Frye Leadership Institute Fellow at Emory University.
She leads UT’s activities in the Information Alliance with the University of Kentucky and Vanderbilt libraries and is a board member of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Library.
She is an active member of Educause; the Association of Research Libraries; the Digital Library Federation; and the International Federation of Library Associations.
