KNOXVILLE — The American Board of Assessment Psychology recently recognized Dr. Leonard Handler from the University of Tennessee’s psychology department as a diplomate.

“A diplomate is a special designation which indicates that you have achieved a high level of skill in research and clinical practice,” Handler said.

Handler’s research includes collaborative and therapeutic methods, which unite the patient’s therapy and the doctor’s assessment. The patient has more input in the process with this type of research.

The American Board of Assessment Psychology is the certification board for doctoral level psychologists with specialized expertise in psychological testing.

Handler is the president-elect for the Society of Personality Assessment and an editor for the Journal of Personality Assessment.

He joined the UT faculty in 1964. In 2002, the Tennessee Psychological Association honored him with the Lifetime Research Achievement Award.
