KNOXVILLE — A Tennessee football All-American and professor emeritus has written a book about his former coach, the legendary Robert R. Neyland.
Dr. Andy Kozar’s “Football as a War Game: The Annotated Journals of General R.R. Neyland” (Falcon Press, 2003) is a personal look into how Neyland approached the game.

techniques, play designs and football strategies,” Kozar, UT professor emeritus of health, exercise and safety science, said.
“This book compiles those rarely seen handwritten journals, tracing the origins of Tennessee football in the general’s own words and thoughts on a day to day, game to game basis, as he wrote them on paper.”
“Football as a War Game” contains more than 250 photographs, 200-plus pages of Neyland’s handwritten journals, coaching strategies, play diagrams, anecdotes and more. Kozar’s commentary throughout adds insight into Neyland’s coaching mindset.
Neyland, who’s 1951 Vols won the national football championship, had 173 wins, 31 losses, and 12 ties. His teams at one point went 62-1 in regular season games, won 36 straight, and held 42 teams scoreless.
Kozar was an All-SEC and All-American fullback at UT from 1948-1952. His 37-year UT academic career ranged from professor to department head to executive assistant to UT President Ed Boling.
