KNOXVILLE –The University of Tennessee TeamVOLS (Volunteer Outreach for Leadership and Service) and the Division of Student Affairs have announced the Second Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
Students, faculty and staff will gather at 8 a.m., Saturday Jan. 18, in the University Center Ballroom to travel to and serve at more than 15 agencies in the Knoxville community.
The program will end at 2 p.m. with lunch and a special presentation by Helen Ashe and Ellen Turner of the Love Kitchen Community Center. The Love Kitchen’s work has been widely recognized through many awards and honors, including the President’s “Point of Light” Citation (1998), the Covenant Platinum Award (1999) and the Second Harvest Food Bank Ageless Heroes Award (2000).
UT’s first Day of Service was held last year. More than 200 students, faculty and staff are expected to participate in this year’s event.
The Day of Service began nationwide in 1994 to celebrate the holiday weekend by honoring King’s life and work of King, who called service the great equalizer.
“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve,” King once said.
