KNOXVILLE — A pair of brothers from Cookeville High School won spots among the top 11 finalists in the Pro2Serve Tennessee Math Contest held Thursday at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
The winners: Wei-Han Bobby Liu and brother Wei-Ning Eddie Liu, Cookeville High School; Jingyuan Wu, Lalit Jain, Jonathan Chung, Oak Ridge High School; William Brian, Collierville High School; Nguyen Hai, Dekalb County High School; Wenjun Zhao, The King’s Academy; Anne Rushing, Girl’s Preparatory School; Nicholas Boatman, Carter High School; Aaron Hadley, Bearden High School.
Wei-Han Bobby Liu was also recognized as one of the top five finalists for the third consecutive year.
If they meet other academic requirements, the winners will qualify for full four-year scholarships to UT-Knoxville.
Since Wei-Han Bobby Liu had won a scholarship two years ago, he was ineligible to win additional money, so the contest sponsors selected an eleventh winner to ensure that 10 scholarships were made available this year.
“We hold the contest to promote mathematics and to courage more good mathematics students in Tennessee to attend the University of Tennessee,” said Dr. John Conway, head of the UT math department.
The 2002 contest was the fourth held by the math department and the second cosponsored by Pro2Serve.
