KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee is adding a new program for African American students who want to attend the state’s flagship campus.
UT Provost Loren Crabtree said those who qualify could receive up to $10,000 over four years. The program is aimed at keeping more of Tennessee’s best African American students in state for their higher education.
Students with at least a 3.0 high school grade point average (GPA) and 18 on the ACT entrance test who plan to enroll this fall will be eligible for the first $2,500 awards. If recipients maintain at least a 2.3 GPA on UT’s four-point scale, they can renew the grant annually.
Students with a 3.4 GPA and 23 ACT and above are eligible for the African American Achiever Scholarship, which pays full in-state tuition for recipients.
“The incentive grant program is for students who have demonstrated that they can succeed academically and graduate from UT,” Crabtree said. “We believe this new program will bring a University of Tennessee education to more African American students.”
