KNOXVILLE — Fall enrollment at the University of Tennessee’s Knoxville campus is up 110 students over last year, the provost said Monday.

Dr. Loren Crabtree said UT has 25,587 undergraduate and graduate students, compared to 25,477 last fall. First-time freshman enrollment went up 153 to 3,958, he said.

“The university has attempted to maintain a stable enrollment of between 25,000 and 26,000 students for several years,” Crabtree said. “That is a number that matches the size of our faculty and student support services.”

Total undergraduate enrollment is 20,158, up 123. The graduate student total is 5,429, down 13.

Forty-five new National Merit Scholars are enrolled — five more than last year and the highest number ever. Crabtree also said the reverse in the decline of enrollment of first-year doctoral students is a positive development.

There are 46 more new doctoral students than in fall 2000, enrollment data show. Master’s degree enrollment is down 110.

Crabtree said African-American enrollment is up slightly as is the percentage of new freshmen that graduated in the top 25 percent of their high school class.
