Statement from Dr. Anne Mayhew, UT Faculty Representative to the NCAA

July 10, 2001

“Representatives from the University met with officials of the NCAA to report on our review of allegations about possible misuse of an urban studies course by student athletes.

“This was the one issue remaining from allegations of possible NCAA violations reported in the media over the past two years. We made an oral report to the NCAA of our review of student transcripts and student work.

“Based on this report and on our review of safeguards in place to prevent any possible abuse in the future, the NCAA issued its letter of June 29, indicating it plans no further inquiry at this time.

“Over the past two years a number of faculty members, most notably the Faculty Senate’s Athletics Subcommittee and the Provost’s Oversight Committee, have made recommendations on how the University can improve the academic careers of student athletes. Many of these recommendations have been implemented, and we can continue to work on others.

“Our Athletics Directors, Joan Cronan and Doug Dickey, their staffs, the President’s office, the Provost and I appreciate the thoughtful attention and hard work of all those who have contributed to these improvement efforts over the past two years.”
