UT Picks Seven Torchbearers

Seven UT seniors are the latest students named Torchbearer.

The highest student honor given by the university was presented Wednesday evening to: Eric Beaty of Gallatin; Rebecca Cassill of Stoney Creek, N.C.; Brad Collett of Cincinnati, Ohio; Catherine Dalton of Kingsport; Laura Lefler of Loudon; English Rockholt of Decatur; and Charles Scruggs of Hendersonville.

Beaty, who just completed his term as president of the Student Government Association, was honored for his work in SGA. He also was a UT Orientation Leader and a member of the All Campus Events Committee, Campus Planning Committee and the Athletics Board.

Cassill was active in All Campus Events, Panhellenic Council, Alternative Spring Break, the Dance Marathon, Student Alumni Associates and UT Ambassadors. She is the past vice president of SGA.

Collett worked in Interfraternity Council, SGA, Alternative Spring Break, the Beaumont Elementary School mentoring program and Love Kitchen. He is a horticulture major.

Dalton received the Torchbearer award for her service to Panhellenic Council, UT Ambassadors and Campus Crusade for Christ. She serves as a peer mentor in the First-Year Studies Program and was an Orientation Leader. She currently is chairperson of the Undergraduate Academic Council.

Lefler has served as director of the Volunteer Action Committee and worked in the Blue-Orange Blood Drive, Campus Chest and the Residents’ Outreach program. She was an Orientation Leader and was president of this year’s Dance Marathon.

Rockholt, who plans to attend medical school after graduation in May, served on the All Campus Events Committee, Cultural Affairs Board, Senior Gift Steering Committee, Student Alumni Associates and the Commission for Women. She recently was named “Greek Woman of the Year.”

Scruggs founded The Cross, a Christian ministry for UT sororities and fraternities. It has become one of the largest Christian organizations at UT and has been adopted on other campuses. He also served the University as a Student Orientation Leader and has been active in SGA.
