Cleaver Memorial Service Is Jan. 14

KNOXVILLE – A memorial service for Dr. Dale Cleaver, UT art professor, will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 14, at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church.

Cleaver died Dec. 23 after a long battle with cancer.
He was a UT faculty member for 30 years and the author of the textbook, -Art: An Introduction,- which is used by more than 150 colleges and universities.

Cleaver earned the doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1953. At UT, he taught art history and won Alumni Outstanding Teaching Awards in 1966 and 1981.
He was University Macebearer, the highest faculty honor at UT, in 1976-77. The same year he was a Phi Kappa Phi Lecturer, a national honor.

He was appointed to the Lindsay Young Professorship in Art History in 1980.
A mountain climber, Cleaver scaled Mt. Blanc, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Rainier. He was a skilled skier, sailor and sculler.

After retiring from teaching, Cleaver gained national recognition for painting landscapes and seascapes of his native Oregon. His work was featured recently in an exhibition at UT’s Ewing Gallery.

Cleaver was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist church.
