MARTIN, Tenn. – Alvin G. (Al) Hooten, vice president for business affairs
at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, has been named
University of Tennessee at Martin vice chancellor for finance and
administration by Chancellor Philip W. Conn. He officially joins the
university Sept. 5.
Hooten succeeds Phil Dane in the position, who became the university’s
director of intercollegiate athletics July 1. The vice chancellor for
finance and administration is a cabinet-level position at UT Martin and
reports directly to the chancellor. Duties include responsibility for all
aspects of the university’s business and physical plant operations.
An Illinois native, Hooten holds a bachelor’s degree in business and a
master’s degree in higher education, college and university business
affairs, from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He also is a
certified government financial manager.
Hooten has held his current position for more than six years. His duties
at Midwestern State include a lead role in the university’s hosting of the
Dallas Cowboys summer training camp. He previously served 17 years as
assistant and associate vice president for finance at Boise State
University in Boise, Idaho. He began his career in 1970 as an assistant
supervisor for auxiliary and service enterprises at SIU-Carbondale.
In making the appointment, Conn says Hooten brings solid business and
facilities management experience to UT Martin.
“We are fortunate to employ a professional administrator with the breadth
and depth of experience that Al Hooten brings to his new post,” Conn said.
“After lengthy discussions with the president of Midwestern State and the
previous president of Boise State, I know that Mr. Hooten’s performance as
a university business officer during the past 30 years has been unusually
varied and highly successful. He will join us with a great combination of
expertise, industriousness and dedication.”
Bud Grimes, director of university relations and advisory search committee
chair, said Hooten will be a good “fit” for the campus and community.
“Mr. Hooten’s previous experiences have prepared him for working with the
university’s business and physical plant operations,” Grimes said. “People
will enjoy having him and his family as part of the community.”
Hooten, who was raised in Southern Illinois, said he looks forward to
returning to the region and working at the university.
“I am pleased and honored to be selected as vice chancellor for finance and
administration at the University of Tennessee at Martin,” Hooten said. “I
was extremely impressed with the people of the university and look forward
to building upon the solid foundation that Phil Dane has established for
the division.”
Hooten and his wife, Debbie, have two children: Carah, 13, and Blake, 10.
