“Knoxville College and UT have a long history of working together to benefit the community and the students at both of our institutions,” UT President J. Wade Gilley said.

“Dr. Hatton is a nationally known figure in higher education. She is an excellent choice to speak at our commencement.”

Hatton came out of retirement in 1997 to assume the presidency of Knoxville College. She founded her own firm, Education Ventures, in 1995 after retiring that year as the first female president of South Carolina State University.

She served as deputy director of the Ford Foundation’s Education and Culture Program and was a scholar-in-residence of the Southern Education Foundation.

Hatton earned the bachelor’s degree from Howard University, the master’s from Atlanta University and the doctor of philosophy from Stanford. She was on the faculty of each of those institutions, Tuskegee University and the University of the District of Columbia.
