Knoxville — Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summitt has been nominated for induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

UT Women’s Athletic Director Joan Cronan said Summitt deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

“It’s always a great honor to be inducted into the Hall of Fame of your chosen profession,” said Cronan. “When you think of women’s basketball, who is the icon out there? It’s Pat Summitt.”

Summitt has coached the Lady Vols to six national championships in her 26 seasons at Tennessee.

Summitt also led the U.S. women’s basketball team to the gold medal in the 1976 Olympic games.

Joining Summitt on the nomination list for the Basketball Hall of Fame is Cathy Rush, former coach of Immaculata College in Philadelphia.

Nominees must receive 18 votes from the 24-member Honors Committee to be elected to the Hall of Fame. The inductees will be announced in May.
