Knoxville — Vice President Al Gore and Texas Governor George W. Bush were the big winners in the Super Tuesday primaries.

A University of Tennessee political scientist said the political landscape may have changed.

“Al Gore really turned this race around a couple of months ago, adjusted his campaign and quit making mistakes,” said Dr. Bill Lyons. “On the other hand, Bill Bradley ran an inept campaign and seemed to pretty much throw in the towel in the last few weeks.”

Gore won every Democratic party primary. McCain won a few states like Vermont and Rhode Island, but Bush won the big states like New York and California.

“Next week, most of the southern states vote, and Bush is very strong in those states,” said Lyons. “McCain doesn’t have a prayer in states like Florida and Texas.”

Bush and Gore have said they would like to work with their primary-race opponents in the future.
