KNOXVILLE — Knoxville Mayor Victor Ashe is serving on a University of Tennessee advisory committee that will review campus transportation and construction plans.
UT President J. Wade Gilley appointed the eight-member group and directed it to review the university’s master plan and work closely with the city on development of parking facilities, the convention center and the city’s proposed park along Second Creek between Cumberland Avenue and the river.
The committee also will review plans for the proposed bridge over Third Creek that would link the main and agriculture campuses, he said.
Gilley said the committee will make recommendations on the master plan and develop guidelines for capital projects exceeding $200,000. He said he also directed the group to look at campus beautification plans and procedures for employing architects and engineers for major building and renovation projects.
Architecture and Planning Dean Marleen Davis is the committee chair.
“A broad consensus regarding our goals for campus planning needs to be developed,” Davis said. “We want to do this through a thoughtful process with a wide range of input.”
Gilley told the committee, which will have its first meeting in early March, wants the group to keep him, Vice President Eli Fly and the UT Board of Trustees informed of its work.
Other committee members are: Provost John Peters; Dr. Jack Britt, vice president for agriculture; Philip Scheurer, senior vice chancellor for business and finance; Alvin Payne, UT director of capital projects; Chris Hammill, a senior in ornamental horticulture and landscape design; and Dr. Bruce Wheeler, professor of history.
